Local people have been unable to dig bodies out of the rubble, the correspondent wrote, because US aircraft target everything that moves on the ground with their heavy machine guns.  When a local youth tried to help one of the stricken families, a helicopter opened strafed him with its machine gun, tearing his body apart.

As of the time of reporting the local Civil Defense forces had been unable to rescue victims due to intense and indiscriminate savage gunfire from the Americans.  Four youths who got out from under the bombardment observed that the residents in the bombed houses were families and young people who remained behind after other family members had evacuated.  By staying they were trying to guard the home for their owners.  These were not houses occupied by Resistance fighters, as American propaganda constantly claims in such situations.

The Resistance bombardment began with mortar rounds.  This was followed by three powerful Grad rockets.  Afterwards, eyewitnesses described how four US Black Hawk helicopters landed inside the camp to evacuate the dead and wounded.  The helicopters took off and then came back for a second load of casualties, in an indication of the large scale and effectiveness of the attack.

The city is in need in other ways as well, as the Americans prepare their next offensive on the city.  The entire city of al-Fallujah has only two ambulances, after the Americans destroyed two other emergency vehicles about a month ago, the correspondent reported.

At about 4pm Wednesday afternoon, an Iraqi man appeared on the highway in the area of as-Sayyidiyah in Baghdad carrying three jerry cans full of gasoline. He was obviously a poor, simple local fellow and when he took up his position at the filling station on the highway, everyone understood that he was trying to make a little money selling the three cans of gasoline below the pump price.

Oddly, though, whenever Iraqis interested in buying the fuel approached him, he angrily drove them away.

After awhile a US patrol made up of three Humvees came up on the gasoline station.  The man looked terrified and panicky and took off running from the Americans.  The US troops laughed at the man’s fright, and got out of the Humvees still enjoying the way they could terrify a local peddler.  But when they prodded the jerry cans that the man had abandoned in his flight, a massive explosion blew them apart and even damaged their nearby Humvee.  The cans were had in fact been full of explosives and were rigged to explode.

The local correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam, who reported the story, noted that the attack not only reflected how sophisticated the Resistance fighters have become in their attacks on the US invaders, but also explains why the US troops are suffering from severe stress and psychological problems, as they face every day hundreds of incidents that can seem innocent but prove deadly.

Correction.

A story under the title “Ten US troops were killed in clashes with the Resistance in ar-Ramadi Wednesday afternoon” appeared in the Iraqi Resistance Report for Wednesday 20 October 2004.  It was based on a dispatch from the Mafkarat al-Islam website.  On Thursday, Mafkarat al-Islam published a correction on that story.  The website said that while the basic substance of the story was true, the incident in which 10 US troops were killed took place in the city of Ba‘qubah.  Ar-Ramadi witnessed only various clashes between the Resistance and the US invaders on Wednesday.

Mafkarat al-Islam printed a corrected version of the story as follows:

At about 3:15pm Wednesday afternoon fighting broke out in the area of 1920 Revolution Street in ar-Ramadi.  Iraqi Resistance forces fired BKC automatic weapons in the fighting.

Elsewhere in Iraq, US forces suffered heavy losses in the Ba‘qubah area in fierce clashes in which Resistance fighters used SBG9 and C5K rockets at the US troops, destroying one Bradley armored vehicle and two Humvees and killing 10 US troops.

The local correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that eight innocent Iraqi civilians perished, one of them a woman, when US troops opened fire indiscriminately in the course of the battle.
